At the March 26 General Meeting of SFCAHT, we learned about innovative approaches to human trafficking prosecution and victim protection. The program featured an u
pdate on the recent anti-human trafficking efforts of the San Francisco District Attorney's Office presented by Assistant District Attorney Evanthia Pappas, Human Trafficking Expert and Beyond Survivor: Voices of Healing Project's activities to support survivors of men sexual victimization presented by Jim Struve, Executive Director of MenHealing.
The meeting held a brief planning session for the upcoming Annual Conference of SFCAHT.

Featuring Safety, Opportunity and Lifelong Relationships Collaborative Project (SF SOL)

The General Meeting featured innovative programs aimed at human trafficking prevention, training of professionals, and assistance of those vulnerable to violence and exploitation. The program included:

  • Update on the San Francisco Safety, Opportunity, and Lifelong Relationships (SF SOL) Collaborative Project presented by Alia Whitney-Johnson, Co-Founder and Executive Director of Freedom Forward and Carly Devlin, Program Manager of the Huckleberry Advocacy and Response Team (H.A.R.T.), Huckleberry Youth Programs. 
  • Overview of the Launchpads Initiative, an online housing rental platform for youth from the San Francisco Extended Foster Care, presented by Monica Balinoff, Program Manager, Freedom Forward.
  • Update on the South Bay collaborative efforts to develop a Media Toolkitresource presented by Sharan Dhanoa, Director of Strategic Development, South Bay Coalition to End Human Trafficking.   

The presentations were followed by a planning session for the 2021 Annual Awareness Campaign of SFCAHT.

Featuring presentations of SFCAHT member agencies about serving survivors in times of pandemic

For over 10 years, SFCAHT’s agencies, organizations, and individual members have been partnering in addressing the vulnerabilities to human trafficking, in fighting the criminal market, and assisting the survivors. The COVID-19 health and economic crisis deepens these vulnerabilities and poses new challenges to the work on protecting and serving the survivors. There could not be a more important time for us to sustain our collaborative efforts, learn from each other’s experience, and increase the support for those in need.  

On May 15, we discussed how law enforcement agencies and service providers continue to fight human trafficking and assist the survivors during the challenging times of global pandemic and shelter-in-place policies. The discussion was followed by a planning session of SFCAHT's activities for the rest of 2020.

Featuring the Anti-Trafficking Model of Sweden

We continue to learn how other countries combat human trafficking, support the survivors, and address the demand for services of trafficked individuals. In January, we presented the anti-trafficking models of Mexico, Germany and Israel. At this general meeting, we continued the series by presenting the anti-trafficking model of Sweden. Sweden’s Ambassador-At-Large for Combating Trafficking in Persons Per-Anders Sunesson, presented Addressing Demand as a Method to Combat Human Trafficking for Sexual Exploitation: The Swedish approach, facts, and results. The presentation was followed by Q&A and a planning session of our work for the rest of 2020.

Featuring Divas Power Initiative, Kenya

At this meeting, Popular Kenyan Dancer Moesha Kibibi Tajiri, member of the Award Winning Dancing Crew FBI (Focus Beyond Imagination) and founder of Divas Power Initiative for Girls, was our featured guest speaker and performer. 

A survivor of abuse, exploitation and extremely challenging life circumstances in the slums of Nairobi, Moesha dedicated her career to empowering girls in similar situations. Moesha's inspiring program, Divas Power Initiative, supports girls from vulnerable communities through education and fostering of their talent. Moesha is currently mentoring over 3000 girls throughout Kenya, including many surviving sexual violence, exploitation, trafficking and HIV. In addition to providing emotional support, leadership and inspiration through dance, Moesha uses her talent and network to raise funds for the girls' school  tuition, books and clothes, monthly rent and utilities, medical needs and food expenses.

  • Overview of the activities of the California Massage Therapy Council on human trafficking prevention presented by Beverly May, Director of Governmental Affairs, Anti-Human Trafficking and IT
  • Update by Reverend Davidson Bidwell-Waite on the SFCAHT Interfaith Committee's volunteer action for community outreach and distribution of the posters of AbolitionistMom's Disrupt Sex Trafficking state-wide campaign
  • Overview of the Photovoice Project with graduates from San Francisco SafeHouse by Sue Lockyer of the Department of Communication Studies at San Francisco State University

Strategic Planning Meeting

Representatives of FBI, SFCAHT's Interfaith Committee and Minerva Schools presented proposals for new collaborative initiatives in reaching out to community members and raising awareness of human trafficking.

The participants in the meeting discussed the planning of SFCAHT's upcoming events and learned about advanced policies and practices of engaging survivors of human trafficking in leadership. The training on Survivor Leadership Engagement and Empowerment was presented by Sarai Smith-Mazariegos, 2017 Modern-Day Abolitionist Award Winner, Founding Executive Director of S.H.A.D.E., a survivor-thriver led organization on the forefront of the Bay Area movement to end human trafficking.

On May 4th professionals, volunteers and community members gathered for a general meeting of SFCAHT to learn about new policies and initiatives designed to prevent human trafficking and improve victim identification and assistance. At this meeting, we installed the 
Hon. Susan M. Breall, Judge of the Superior Court of California, City and County of San Francisco, as Co-Chair of SFCAHT.  The meeting program featured: presentation by William Murphy, Alameda County District Attorney's Office, H.E.A.T. Watch Labor Trafficking Task Force; Legislative and policy update by Tara Anderson, Director of Policy at the San Francisco District Attorney's Office; Updates on trends in working with vulnerable children in the juvenile system by Rebecca Marcus, Education Attorney, San Francisco Public Defender's Office, Juvenile Court Division; and Report by the SFCAHT Interfaith Committee on the 2018 business outreach volunteer campaign informing hotels about the public notice requirements of California State legislation (SB 1193 & 225 and AB 260) and providing them with posters to display on their premises.

Representatives of SFCAHT member-agencies and general community gathered to learn more about Freedom FWD's innovative programs and SFPD's anti-trafficking priorities. The meeting featured presentations by:

  • Alia Whitney-Johnson, Freedom FWD's Co-Founder & Executive Director.
  • San Francisco Police Chief William Scott.

The meeting featured an overview of 
Homeland Security Investigations programs designed to address human trafficking and a presentation by Hon. Susan M. Breall, Judge of the Superior Court of California, City and County of San Francisco about the judicial trainings on human trafficking. The presentations were followed by a strategic planning session. The meeting approved SFCAHT 3-year strategy and the action plan for 2017-2018.

The meeting featured an overview of the Mayor's Task Force on Anti-Human Trafficking by Minouche Kandel, Esq., Women's Policy Director, San Francisco Department on the Status of Women and a presentation of the online human trafficking awareness training for hospitality industry available as a free resource on the website of Stanford University. Human rights documentary filmmaker Sheri Shuster presented about her work on the documentary Still I Rise.

Love Never Fails, on being elected unanimously at this meeting as Co-Chair of SFCAHT!

SFCAHT's Chair Marianna Warnee spoke about the planning of the 2016 Anti-Trafficking Awareness Campaign.

Legislative Update and Presentation on MISSSEY's Services to Survivors of Human Trafficking

May 19, 2015

Representatives of more than 30 government agencies and community based organizations participated in this meeting as MISSSEY's Co-Founder and staff presented about their direct services and prevantive programs in addressing child sexual exploitation, domestic minor sex trafficking in the greater Bay Area. The SFCAHT's Policy Committee Chair, Tara Anderson, Policy Analist at the SF District Attorney's Office, presented an update on local and state anti-trafficking legislation. Sister Marie Gaillac from Northern California Sisters against Human Trafficking announced their project to mobilaze the hospitality industry for trafficking prevention action in collaboration with the Jewish Coalition to End Human Trafficking. The participants discussed a report from the SFCAHT strategic planning task force and approved its recomendations and plan for future actions.  ​Isabel Ullmann, a research fellow with NCJW and SFCAHT, reported on the 2015 update of the Directory of Services for Survivors of Human Trafficking.

SFCAHT steering committee members and other activists met for a four-hour session to brainstorm and strategize about SFCAHT's operation and programming. The group analyzed SFCAHT's work to date and identified future goals and strategies. A task force was formed to further the decisions made at the retreat, and determined objectives, responsibilities, and timelines.
 
A final draft of the strategic plan will be distributed for discussion at the next SFCAHT General Meeting.
